Hammer Bros. are a species of hammer-throwing Koopas in the Mario franchise. They first appear in Super Mario Bros.. Hammer Bros. are among the stronger enemies encountered by Mario and his friends, and are elite-ranked members of the Koopa Troop. Hammer Bros. are often encountered in pairs. They have several variants, such as the fireball-throwing Fire Bros. and the boomerang-throwing Boomerang Bros..

In an Iwata Asks, it is revealed that Hammer Bros. were created by Kazuaki Morita.[1]

History

Super Mario series

Super Mario Bros.

In Super Mario Bros., Hammer Bros. are found in a few levels, with World 3-1 being the first one that they appear in. Hammer Bros. are usually found on parallel platforms, guarding a small area, and they jump up and down and move back and forth while throwing a continuous supply of hammers at Mario or Luigi. If a Hammer Bro stays onscreen for too long without being defeated, it starts to chase them.

Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels

In Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, Hammer Bros. appear in more levels, possibly owing to the game having a higher difficulty than Super Mario Bros.. The Hammer Bros. in the first six worlds retain their exact behavior from Super Mario Bros., although starting with World 7, any Hammer Bro that Mario or Luigi encounter instantly begin to slowly chase after them.

Super Mario Bros. 3

A Hammer Bro in the World 1 Enemy Course of the original version of Super Mario Bros. 3

In Super Mario Bros. 3, Hammer Bros. return as an enemy, and the game also serves as the debut appearance of their first three variants, Fire Bros., Boomerang Bros., and the heavyweight Sledge Bros.. Hammer Bros. have a slightly larger role than in the previous two Super Mario titles. The game also introduces the Hammer Suit power-up, which allows Mario or Luigi to throw hammers just like a Hammer Bro.

Aside from appearing in levels, where they behave similarly as in Super Mario Bros., Hammer Bros., along with their variants, are also encountered on the overworld map, where they patrol back and forth on a certain marker. When Mario or Luigi step on to the same one, they are forced into an Enemy Course where they have to battle two Hammer Bros (one in the World 1 Enemy Course) or its variants, depending on the location. Whenever Mario or Luigi exits a location, including from losing an extra life, the Hammer Bro moves to a different marker on the map, although within a certain range. In an Enemy Course, after Mario and Luigi defeat both Hammer Bros., a treasure chest appears, containing a certain item that can be used from the world map. If Mario or Luigi use a Music Box on the overworld map, they can put Hammer Bros. and other overworld enemies to sleep. They wake up after Mario or Luigi have cleared a level or lost two extra lives.

The original Nintendo Entertainment System version uses the same overworld sprites for Hammer Bros. and their variants, although the Super Mario All-Stars and Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 remakes give the Hammer Bro variants their own distinct overworld sprites.

Super Mario World

In Super Mario World, while Hammer Bros. do not make an appearance, they were originally considered or plannedMedia:SMW Preliminary Sheets.jpg to make another returning appearance, along with Sledge Bros.. Although this did not occur, the game introduced another Hammer Bro variant, the Amazing Flyin' Hammer Brothers, and a distant relative, the Sumo Bros..

New Super Mario Bros.

In New Super Mario Bros., Hammer Bros. (along with three of their variants: Fire Bros., Boomerang Bros., and Sledge Bros.) return as enemies from Super Mario Bros. 3. Hammer Bros. act similar as in their previous Super Mario series appearances. They are mainly found on the world maps, starting with World 5, and otherwise make only one level appearance in World 2-4. Unlike Super Mario Bros. 3, when Mario walks into a Hammer Bro on the world map, he is not forced to battle it, as the Hammer Bro is instead encountered within the level itself, usually around the start of the level or around the Checkpoint Flag, if Mario has crossed it. Defeating the Hammer Bro causes it to drop a random item.

Template:Quote2 In Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, a pair of Hammer Bros. are encountered at the end of Mushroom Way, and are the first bosses fought. Their special attacks include Hammer Time (an offensive attack) and Valor Up (which increases its attack power). After defeating the Hammer Bros., Mario receives a Hammer.

At Bowser's Keep, there is a Hammer Bro named Dr. Topper who has a love for quizzes, and is basically a palette swap of the normal Hammer Bro.

Paper Mario series

Paper Mario

In Paper Mario, Hammer Bros. are mainly encountered as guards at Bowser's Castle, although if Mario decides, he can first encounter them at Shy Guy's Toy Box. Hammer Bros. are featured as some of the more powerful guards of Bowser's Koopa Troop, along with the Koopatrol and Magikoopas. During battle, a Hammer Bro's hammer-throwing ability may cause Mario to shrink.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

In Paper Mario: The-Thousand-Year-Door, Hammer Bros. are enemies mainly found in Rogueport Sewers. Two of the Hammer Bro variants, Boomerang Bro and the Fire Bro, also make their debut within the Paper Mario series.

Hammer Bros. have an unseen variant named Business Bro; they are never actually seen in-game, but a lengthy dialogue with a Hammer Bro named Hamma Jamma in the Glitz Pit reveals that his father was a Business Bro. Hamma Jamma reveals a fact that a Business Bro can be flipped on its back, unlike Hammer Bros. but similar to Koopa Troopas.

Mario & Luigi series

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga / Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions

In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and its Nintendo 3DS remake Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions, Hammer Bros. are encountered as enemies in Bowser's Castle, retaining their traditional attack of throwing hammers at Mario and Luigi. The game introduces several variants of Hammer Bros. including Border Bros., Yo Bros., Limbo Bros. (who were also given a stronger counterpart, Elite Limbo Bros.), and Chomp Bros..

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time

In Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, only one pair of Hammer Bros. make an appearance, the L33t Hamm3r Broz., who confront Mario and Luigi, as well as their baby counterparts Baby Mario and Baby Luigi, in Vim Factory. The L33t Hammer Broz. communicate in leetspeak, and have been brainwashed by Shroobs from the mind-control helmets on their head. The L33t Hamm3r Broz. are fought by Baby Mario and Baby Luigi, and are an otherwise friendly pair of Hammer Bros., which is revealed after Baby Mario and Baby Luigi defeat them in battle and destroy their antenna helmets, as the L33t Hamm3r Broz. give the babies two spare hammers as thanks for being freed.

Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix

In Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix, two Hammer Bros. are featured in level 3-1, where they guard the entrance to Wario's Carnival. Either Mario or Luigi must win in a dance-off against them before they are allowed to enter.

Mario Baseball series

Mario Superstar Baseball

In Mario Superstar Baseball, a Hammer Bro along with Fire Bro and Boomerang Bro all appear as unlockable characters. A Hammer Bro can be unlocked by clearing Adventure Mode as Bowser. Hammer Bro uses a large hammer as his baseball bat. Hammer Bro, Fire Bro, and Boomerang Bro all have nearly identical stats, with batting being their strongest stat, although their other stats (Defense, Pitching, Speed) are only average or slightly above average. If Hammer Bro strikes out a batter while pitching, it breakdances by spinning on its shell.

Super Princess Peach

In Super Princess Peach, Hammer Bros. appear as an enemy, this time alongside Amazing Flyin' Hammer Bros., which have a sleeping variant named Calm Hammer Bro. and Calm Amazing Flying Hammer Bro. respectively. Hammer Bros. also received another variant, Army Hammer Bros.. In the Glossary, Army Hammer Bro is said to be the leader of the Hammer Bros., although the Glossary remains uncertain if he is actually any stronger.

Mario Strikers series

Super Mario Strikers

In Super Mario Strikers, Hammer Bros are among the playable sidekicks assisting the team captain, along with Koopa Troopas, Toads, and Birdos.
