Eggplant Men, also formatted Egg Plant Men,[1] are a species of eggplants from the Wrecking Crew series. They sport a pair of white eyes covered by a black mask (resembling welding masks or sandblasting masks). Eggplant Men first appear in the game Wrecking Crew.
Eggplant Men served as the design inspiration for the Eggplant Wizard enemies from Kid Icarus, and the game's graphics designer Toru Osawa's "passion for eggplants."[2]
History
Wrecking Crew series
Wrecking Crew
In Wrecking Crew, Eggplant Men are first found in Phase 2 of the construction site. An Eggplant Man runs around in a predictable pattern; it runs straight until it hits a drum and has to turn around. It climbs up or down any ladder it comes across in its path. If both a ladder up and a ladder down are in its path, it goes down if moving left and up if moving right. Its behavior is similar to how Gotchawrenches behaved in VS. Wrecking Crew.
Wrecking Crew '98
In Wrecking Crew '98, an Eggplant Man is the first challenger in puzzle mode. Unlike the first Wrecking Crew, Eggplant Man's feet are attached directly to his underside, so he does not have any legs. Eggplant Men also appear in their original capacity in the port of Wrecking Crew.
Super Smash Bros. series
Super Smash Bros. Melee
An Eggplant Man appears in Super Smash Bros. Melee as a collectible trophy. It can only be obtained in the Lottery.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, an Eggplant Man appears as a Novice-class Shield-type primary spirit. The image used for this spirit is a scaled-up variant of one of its sprites from Wrecking Crew. When equipped, the spirit simply increases the fighter's power without granting any particular effect. In the spirit battle, the player confronts a team of six Warios on the Wrecking Crew stage.
WarioWare: Twisted!
In WarioWare: Twisted!, Eggplant Men make an appearance in the 9-Volt microgame Wrecking Crew. Here, Mario has to destroy all of their ladders with his hammer. If an Eggplant Man touches Mario, the player loses at the microgame.
NES Remix
Eggplant Men are featured in several Wrecking Crew challenges in NES Remix.
Other appearances
An Eggplant Man also appears in Chibi-Robo! as Kid Eggplant, one of the three treasures Captain Plankbeard is searching for. The captain is wild about eggplants, and attempts to capture Kid Eggplant, but he does not succeed. For freeing him, Kid Eggplant rewards Chibi-Robo with a Super Eggplant and a Kid Eggplant Sticker, after Chibi kindly rejects Kid Eggplant's offer to turn him into an eggplant.
Kid Eggplant has the Japanese name "Nasubi Kamen," which is identical to the Japanese name of Eggplant Man.
