Metal Mario refers to one of Mario's forms and a standalone character in the Mario franchise. As a form, Metal Mario's first appearance is in the Super Mario series title, Super Mario 64, but as a standalone character, Metal Mario debuts in the Nintendo 64 title, Super Smash Bros.. In the Super Smash Bros. series, the Metal Mario form has been converted into a metal status applicable to any fighter, and whenever a fighter is in their metal form, they become heavier and therefore harder to carry and throw.

In Super Mario 64, Mario can become Metal Mario whenever he puts on a Metal Cap, which he can obtain by breaking open a green ! Block, but these only become usable once Mario activates a green ! Switch in the Cavern of the Metal Cap. In this area, Mario initially starts out as Metal Mario automatically.

In Super Smash Bros., Metal Mario is featured in stage 9 of 1P Game, being the mode's penultimate opponent. He is fought on his own unique stage that is absent from VS. Mode.

In Mario Golf for the Nintendo 64, Metal Mario is a playable character, and his strength is higher than any other character's. Metal Mario does not appear in the original Japanese release.

In Dr. Mario 64, Metal Mario is the final boss in Wario's story. Unlike his earlier appearances, Metal Mario was made to resemble the game's main protagonist, Dr. Mario.

In Super Smash Bros. Melee, Metal Mario is fought in Adventure Mode, this time on the Battlefield stage. If Luigi has been unlocked, Metal Luigi joins alongside Metal Mario as well. There is also a trophy of Metal Mario.

In Super Mario 64 DS, Wario can touch a Power Flower to become Metal Wario temporarily. Mario no longer retains his metal form, and Wing Mario and Balloon Mario were made his only two unique forms.

In Mario Kart 7, Metal Mario is an unlockable playable character. He is a heavyweight driver, and can be unlocked by completing the 150cc Special Cup.
