==Deletion policy==
While browsing Nintendo Wiki, you may encounter pages or images which are candidates for deletion. In the case of pages, the page may be blank or just not appropriate for the Nintendo Wiki, among other problems. In the case of images, the image may be inappropriate for Nintendo Wiki. If this is the case, it may be time to add the page or image to the list of the [[:Category:Candidates for deletion|candidates for deletion]].
Generally articles may be immediately deleted when they are either:
*Pages created just to vandalize or disrupt
*Patent nonsense (total gibberish)
*Unused duplicate images, or images which have been replaced by a higher quality version
*Too short (depends on the subject)

In other cases, there are more things to consider.
Normal users cannot delete pages, but they can tag them for attention and deletion by administrators.

#Whether a "rough consensus" has been achieved
Before deleting a page, it is important to carefully consider whether it actually warrants being deleted. A page should not be deleted just because it is poorly written or contains problems which can be fixed through [[Project:Cleanup|cleanup]]. If you are not certain, consult the Cleanup help page to see a list of reasons an article may need to be cleaned up. If you still aren't certain, start a discussion in the article's [[Help:Talk page|talk page]].

==On deleting pages==
===Reasons a page should be deleted===
Here are some guidelines [[Nintendo Wiki:Administrators|administrators]] should follow in making the decision to delete a page or not.
* Blank - A blank article is no use to anyone.
* Obsolete - Generally, when a new page has been created that contains the information formerly found on, and replaces, the current page. An obsolete page may also be blank.
* Irrelevant - An article that is not related to Nintendo Wiki in any way (for example, an article about cooking).
* Vanity page - A vanity page is a page created by a specific person about themselves. This may be more specifically about the individual who created the page, or other vanity topics.
* Spam/Advertising - A spam or advertising page contains advertisements for a product or service.
* Vandalism/Opinion - A page that is pure vandalism or solely exists to convey someones opinion (for example, a rant page, a complaint about another user, etc).
* Obscene image - An image which is very inappropriate (especially one containing nudity or extreme graphic violence or gore) may not be suitable for public viewing. A general guideline is that if an image is unsuitable (or illegal) for viewing by those under a reasonable age group, it should be deleted.
* Irrelevant image - An image that does not belong on Nintendo Wiki because it is not related to games or gaming (for example, a picture of a tree, or a bus shelter).

#When deleting a page, one may or may not want to delete its talk page or any subpages as well. If the talk page is ''not'' deleted, put a link to the deletion discussion thread on the talk page.
===Steps to take before deleting a page===
#Simply deleting a page does ''not'' automatically delete its talk page. If you delete these as well, do that first, and then the main page.
* Blank - Before deleting the page, there are two important steps to take. First, check the Talk page and see if there is a reason why the article is blank. Also check the page's history. There may be a reason given for blanking the page, or it may turn out the page was blanked by a vandal. If the page was vandalized, revert it. If the page has always been blank, see if you can fill in a few basic details about the topic yourself, and change the article to a stub by added {{t|Stub}} to the article. If you can do this, there is no reason to delete the page. Later you or someone else can fill in a full article about the topic.
#When filling in the "Reason for deletion" text, ensure that the following is ''not'' included:
* Obsolete - Confirm that the article is obsolete by checking the page that has replaced it.
#*Any copyright infringing text
* Irrelevant - There is usually no way to modify an irrelevant page so that it doesn't require deletion.
#*Personal information, e.g. ''<nowiki>content was: 'John Doe smells bad and his home phone # is (481) 555-2016</nowiki>''
* Vanity page - This page may have been created accidentally by a user who was attempting to create a User Page. Before marking the article for deletion, check the history, determine who made the page, and post a message on his or her talk page advising him or her of the problem.
#Don't delete pages unless you know how to undelete as well.
* Spam/Advertising - Before marking a Spam or Advertising page for deletion, consider if the topic of the page warrants an actual article. If the name of the page is acceptable for the name of an article, consider deleting the correct text and replacing it with neutral information on the subject. If you do not know enough to write a full article, write as much as you can (even a single sentence, such as "GameSpy Arcade is a service for helping users find multi-player game servers" may be sufficient) and add a {{t|Stub}} tag to the page. If you don't know anything about the topic, consider tagging it for cleanup. If you can make these changes, there is no reason to delete the page. Later on, you or someone else can fill in a full article about that topic.
#Redirects to deleted pages should be deleted or redirected elsewhere to avoid broken redirects.
* Vandalism/Opinion - Before deleting the page, consider if the subject and title of the article are suitable for a neutral point of view article. If so, check the page's history to make sure the page was not vandalized. If the topic is suitable for an actual article, consider removing the current text and replacing it with neutral information on the subject. If you do not know enough to write a full article, write as much as you can and mark the page with a {{t|Stub}} tag. If you can make these changes, there is no reason to delete the page.
#If an article title needs to be deleted, but some of the content could be used in a different (existing) article, proceed as follows: move the article from {{fake link|really silly article title}} to a {{fake link|better title}}, in order to preserve the history. Next, copy the content to the {{fake link|existing article}}, with an edit comment like ''(moved content from really silly article title - see the page history of better title for author attribution)''. The {{fake link|really silly article title}} will then be a redirect with no page history which can be deleted. {{fake link|Better title}} would then be changed to redirect to {{fake link|existing article}}.
* Irrelevant image - Before marking for deletion, check the "What links here" button in the toolbox under the search bar to see where the image is used - it might currently be used appropriately in a way you had not thought of.

==Unused images==
==Marking a page for deletion==
Users are supposed to use all images they upload within 24 hours, otherwise they are eligible for deletion. Images that do not appear on any pages automatically get listed on [[Special:UnusedFiles]]. However, aside from [[Nintendo Wiki:Personal images|personal images]], being unused in and of itself is not enough reason for an image to be deleted: the image could indeed be useful somewhere, so it is always good to check before deleting unused files. Additionally, simply saying "unused" is not a valid reason when marking images with {{tem|delete}}. Images are often unused because they were replaced, in which case, the replacement file must be linked to in the delete template and at least named in the deletion log.
If you have read all of the above information, and still feel that a page or file is only suitable for deletion, tag it with {{t|Delete}}.

Please note that if an image is being URL linked, such as through a user's monobook, then it may appear as an unused image. However these images are supposed to be tagged with {{tem|not-unused}} to ensure they are not accidentally deleted.
It is recommended that you add a reason, which should be added after the pipe. Example: <code><nowiki>{{Delete|vandalism}}</nowiki></code>

Deletion policy[edit]

Generally articles may be immediately deleted when they are either:

  • Pages created just to vandalize or disrupt
  • Patent nonsense (total gibberish)
  • Unused duplicate images, or images which have been replaced by a higher quality version
  • Too short (depends on the subject)

In other cases, there are more things to consider.

Deciding whether to delete[edit]

  1. Whether a "rough consensus" has been achieved
  2. Use common sense and respect the judgment and feelings of wiki participants.
  3. When in doubt, don't delete.

On deleting pages[edit]

Here are some guidelines administrators should follow in making the decision to delete a page or not.

  1. When deleting a page, one may or may not want to delete its talk page or any subpages as well. If the talk page is not deleted, put a link to the deletion discussion thread on the talk page.
  2. Simply deleting a page does not automatically delete its talk page. If you delete these as well, do that first, and then the main page.
  3. When filling in the "Reason for deletion" text, ensure that the following is not included:
    • Any copyright infringing text
    • Personal information, e.g. content was: 'John Doe smells bad and his home phone # is (481) 555-2016
  4. Don't delete pages unless you know how to undelete as well.
  5. Redirects to deleted pages should be deleted or redirected elsewhere to avoid broken redirects.
  6. If an article title needs to be deleted, but some of the content could be used in a different (existing) article, proceed as follows: move the article from really silly article title to a better title, in order to preserve the history. Next, copy the content to the existing article, with an edit comment like (moved content from really silly article title - see the page history of better title for author attribution). The really silly article title will then be a redirect with no page history which can be deleted. Better title would then be changed to redirect to existing article.

Unused images[edit]

Users are supposed to use all images they upload within 24 hours, otherwise they are eligible for deletion. Images that do not appear on any pages automatically get listed on Special:UnusedFiles. However, aside from personal images, being unused in and of itself is not enough reason for an image to be deleted: the image could indeed be useful somewhere, so it is always good to check before deleting unused files. Additionally, simply saying "unused" is not a valid reason when marking images with {{delete}}. Images are often unused because they were replaced, in which case, the replacement file must be linked to in the delete template and at least named in the deletion log.

Please note that if an image is being URL linked, such as through a user's monobook, then it may appear as an unused image. However these images are supposed to be tagged with {{not-unused}} to ensure they are not accidentally deleted.

Things to remember[edit]

  • Excessive and/or unjustified deleting can result in loss of admin powers.
