Snifits are a variation of Shy Guys featured in the Mario franchise. They first appear in Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic, released in the west as Super Mario Bros. 2, and have since become a part of the Mario franchise. The biggest difference with a Snifit is that they wear a gas mask-like face covering which has a nozzle that they spit bullets out from. Like Shy Guys, most Snifits wear a red robe.

History[edit]

Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic / Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]

In Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic and Super Mario Bros. 2, Snifits are featured in three colors: red, gray and pink. Pink Snifits are like pink Shy Guys in that they walk only in a single direction and, upon touching a platform, change direction; the only difference is that pink Snifits stop only to spit out one bullet. Gray Snifits remain in one place, but jump up and down while firing bullets. In desert levels, due to palette limitations, the gray Snifits are instead colored light green. The only red Snifit encountered is in World 3-3, and it is similar to pink Snifits except it walks off the edge of a platform and changes direction upon landing. Aside from this, red Snifits are one of the slots featured in Bonus Chance.

In Super Mario All-Stars's remake of Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario Advance, all pink Snifits are instead colored light blue.

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island[edit]

Snifits return as enemies in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, their debut appearance within the Yoshi franchise. They also appear in the Game Boy Advance version, Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars[edit]

Black-robed Snifits appear as enemies in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, in which they are only servants of Booster alongside Spookums. In Japanese, Spookums are instead identified as Snifits whereas the black-robed Snifits have an entirely different name referring to them as Booster's minions.

The three main Snifits serving Booster have a number listed after their name. The first one, Snifit 1 (or No. 1) is Booster's right-hand man, and during one part he greets Mario in the reception room of Booster Tower. The second one is Snifit 2 (or No. 2) who, at one point, urges Mario to not follow Booster on his train. The third one, Snifit 3 (or No. 3) at one point fires a barrage of bullets at Mario in a hallway of Booster Tower. At the end, Snifit 3 just looks out the window and tries to make casual conversation with Mario by talking about how nice the weather is.

Mario Party series[edit]

In Mario Party 3, a Snifit appears as a partner for Princess Daisy in duel boards. This is one of the few times that a Snifit is an ally instead of an enemy.

In Mario Party Superstars, the Snifit Patrol now consists of Snifits instead of Snufits like in Mario Party 2, although both games use the name Snifit Patrol.

Mario & Luigi series[edit]

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga[edit]

In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, while regular Snifits do not appear, they received several variants including Spiky Snifit, Laser Snifit, Ice Snifit, and Gunner Guy.

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time[edit]

In Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, a Snifit variant named Snifaro appears in Gritzy Caves. Snifaro is a Snifit pharaoh in a sarcophagus that is standing atop a regular Snifit, which is revealed when they open it up to shoot bullets. If Mario or Luigi uses a Bro Flower on one, the sarcophagus burns up, resulting in the Snifit fleeing and Snifaro remaining to fight on its own.

Appearances in other media[edit]

In The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! Snifits made several appearances as King Koopa's minions and in some cases, hand-held weapons utilized in a manner similar to machine guns.

In Nintendo Comics System Snifits were shown to be high ranking soldiers of Bowser, with stories such as Duh Stoopid Bomb! showing Snifits as being the leaders of Bowser's Shy Guy henchmen.

A single Snifit can be seen in the comic Super Mario Adventures during Bowser's forced wedding to Princess Toadstool.

The garbagemen in the Super Mario Bros. film are identified as Snifits in a single line of dialogue from Iggy. Earlier on, similarly garbed henchmen lacking the breathing filter apparatus were likely meant to be Shy Guys, though they were not identified as such through dialogue.

Variants[edit]

There are a few different types of Snifits, and a difference with several of them is that they shoot different harmful objects from their nozzles, including ice, spike balls, lasers, or even explosives.

Apprentice[edit]

Apprentices are Spookums training to become bodyguards for Booster in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.

Gunner Guy[edit]

Gunner Guys are a type of Snifit with a very long nozzle that is used as an artillery weapon. They appear in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.

Ice Snifit[edit]

An eskimo Snifit that appears in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. Ice Snifits attack by shooting chunks of ice at Mario and Luigi. If attacked with Mario's Firebrand, their parka will be destroyed.

Laser Snifit[edit]

A variation of Snifit that appears in the Woohoo Hooniversity level in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. Laser Snifits attack with a hoop laser that Mario or Luigi must jump through. When the stampede of scientists run out of Woohoo Hooniversity, one of the scientists trips, then an odd chemical turns the scientist into a Laser Snifit.

Scorchit[edit]

Scorchit is a variant of Snifit that breathes flames out of its mouth. It made its only appearance in Yoshi's Island DS.

Snifaro[edit]

Snifaros are two Snifits in a sarcophagus that can be used like a rocket. If a Bro Flower is used on a Snifaro, the sarcophagus will overheat and break, forcing one Snifit to run off, and the one with the headdress to fight like a standard Snifit. Snifaros have two attacks: they hover over to Mario or Luigi, then the bottom and top Snifit shoot them in random order, or the top Snifit would pop out, then activate the sarcophagus' rocket propulsion system and fly into Mario or Luigi.

Snufit[edit]

Snufits are a variant of Snifit introduced in Super Mario 64, in which they are encountered in Hazy Maze Cave. Aside from having an apparition-like form, Snufits are very similar to Snifits, with both having the same Japanese name and sometimes the same English name as well. Snifits later took on a friendly role in Mario Party 2 as the Snifit Police in the Space Land board. In Super Mario 64 DS, Snufits more closely resemble a regular Shy Guy, albeit with a ghostly tail.

Spiky Snifit[edit]

A cactus enemy with a Snifit mask that appears in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. They either fire a tin can or a mushroom at Mario and Luigi.
